Why Fall is Perfect for Family Photos in Lakeland & Plant City Florida

Fall is a magical time of year, especially in Central Florida. The weather cools down just enough to make outdoor activities enjoyable (hopefully). As a family photographer based in Lakeland and Plant City, Florida, I believe fall is the perfect season for capturing those beautiful family moments. Whether you’re looking to update your family portraits or create lasting memories, fall offers the perfect backdrop for your photos.

The Beauty of Fall in Florida

West Central Florida may not have the dramatic fall foliage that you find in other parts of the country, but that doesn’t mean we’re missing out on the beauty of the season. Our fall is subtler, with slightly cooler temperatures and less humidity. The light during the fall months is soft and golden, adding a warm and natural glow to your photos. Plus, the slightly cooler temperatures mean you won’t be sweating through your session (again, hopefully), making it more comfortable for everyone involved.

Ideal Locations for Fall Family Photos

  1. Downtown Plant City
Downtown Plant City is a gem for family photos, especially in the fall. The historic buildings, brick streets, and charming storefronts offer a picturesque backdrop that’s both timeless and unique. The area is filled with character and small town charm. I love that it doesn’t date your pictures with the season. It’s the perfect neutral location. You can see one of my favorite fall family sessions in downtown Plant City here.
  2. Lake Parker in Lakeland
Lake Parker is another fantastic location for fall family photos. The sprawling park features lush greenery and plenty of open space for kids to run and play. In the fall, the trees start to display colors that perfectly complement fall vibes. We might not get red and yellow leaves…but Lake Parker is the only place around Lakeland and Plant City that I feel looks like fall.
  3. E&E Family Farm
E&E Family farm is the cutest family owned farm with an endless amount of rustic charm. They have the most unique set ups, from their retro trucks, to a silo, an airstream, and a greenhouse. All that they make available for photo sessions, with the cutest props. And of course they have the cutest farm animals.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

Choosing what to wear for your fall family photos can be a fun part of the process! Here are a few tips to help you select outfits that will look great and make you feel confident:

  1. Warm, Earthy Tones
Fall is all about rich, earthy colors. Think deep reds, burnt oranges, mustard yellows, olive greens, and browns. We might not get to see these actual colors in nature but they add a cozy, seasonal feel to your photos.
  2. Layering is Key
Even though Florida doesn’t get very cold, adding layers to your outfits can give them more texture and depth. Consider lightweight scarves, cardigans, or vests. Layering also allows you to mix and match colors and patterns, creating a visually interesting look.
  3. Coordinate Without Matching
Coordinating your family’s outfits can create a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy. Choose a color palette with 2-3 main colors and have each family member wear different shades or patterns within that palette. This approach allows everyone to express their personal style while still looking connected.
  4. Comfort First
Make sure everyone is comfortable in their outfits. If you have little ones, avoid itchy fabrics or anything too tight. When your family feels good in what they’re wearing, it will show in the photos!
